Don't just stand there, do something!

Write letters, kvetch to your friends, educate your neighbors, do what you can to spread the word about this issue so we can keep Tucson a beautiful place to work, live, and play.

Current and ongoing actions

More education and outreach opportunities are being explored in order to ensure that, whether they are bothered by the jet noise or not, affected residents are at least aware of the issues surrounding the problem. To this end TSS has mailed a flyer to neighborhood leaders across Tucson to share with fellow residents. This can be viewed and/or printed here:

The local daily papers have even deigned to publish some guest opinions and letters to the editor ("LTTE") about DMAFB jet noise and/or the processes behind the JLUS and AEZ. While this is a nice effort, what has been published is only a fraction of what has been submitted and thus does not paint a true picture of public opinion; further, the few LTTE submitted to the Arizona Daily Star demanding reasonableness in balancing the needs of the City of Tucson and those of DMAFB which do get published are often relegated to the online- only "More Letters" section (meaning those who only read the paper version never see them) as described in this article in the Tucson Weekly. Therefore, more letters need to be written by more people to let the papers know that it is not just residents around the Base who are concerned about this issue and that we will not be marginalized. What has been published so far (plz send us URLs of any we missed):

The Military Community Compatibility Committee ("MC3") process (aka "the mediation") is still ongoing. Please see our MC3 page for more details.

So, what can I do?

A wise man once said, "Don't just read the media, BE the media!" Some suggestions for getting and spreading knowledge:

  • If the jet noise bothers you, plz let DMAFB know (228-5091, and remember that whoever answers the phone has no control over where and when the jets fly). Currently, DMAFB officials are under the impression that Tucsonans have no problem with jet noise because they only got 200- something complaints.
  • Talk to your friends, co- workers, and/or neighbors.
  • Write letters to the editors of the local papers. The Arizona Daily Star has guidelines for publishing letters to the editor and guest columns within its pages; adherence to their rules should increase the likelihood that your opinions get published.
  • Share and exchange information.
  • Attend public hearings, meetings, or other events about this and related issues whenever possible to learn what the Official Story is (forewarned is forearmed).
  • Try to meet with the Mayor, City Council, and other elected officials (they work for YOU, not the other way around) to share your concerns.
  • Put a block of time on your next neighborhood association meeting agenda to have an informal teach-in.

Since it is clear that the established media are not covering all sides of the DMAFB story with equal fervor, it is imperative that we fill in the information gaps ourselves.

Contact your representatives and express your concerns. While they may think they can get away with ignoring a handful of letters, phone calls, or emails, they can not dismiss a deluge.
